Taking care of your hearing aids is not that difficult. In fact by taking proper care of your hearing aids, you can prolong their operational life and also avoid any necessity of occasional repairs.

Here we are discussing few tips for taking care of your hearing aids:

Battery Compartment Door

These battery doors provided in hearing aids are used on daily basis. When hearing aids are not in use, you must open its battery doors. Due to the skin oils lots of grime and dirt can accumulate on the battery door edges. You can use the brush provided by your audiologist for cleaning the battery door edges.
Volume Control Knob

Hearing aids are equipped with volume control and it is used frequently. The oil from your skin can cause the build up of grime and dust on the volume control. This dirt can also accumulate underneath the control wheel and this can even result in the failure of volume control. You should clean the volume control wheel both from above and underneath with the help of brush.
Telephone Switches

Some older hearing aid models are equipped with the telephone switches. You need to clean the switches to remove dust and grime in both the positions.

In case one of the hearing aid is making the buzzing sound and you fail to hear any amplification, you must examine the telephone switch to ensure that it is not toggled to the phone.
Memory Buttons

These days hearing aids are equipped with memory buttons for saving memories for different environments. You must remove dust and grime from memory buttons with the help of brush as this dust can work its way to internal circuits.
Moisture

Moisture adversely affects the working of any electronic device. Your hearing aids remain in such environment for about 17-20 hours each day. You should keep your hearing aids in moisture guard box at night to minimize any problem due to the moisture.

Microphone

The microphones used in the hearing aids are tiny and are placed in the faceplates of hearing devices. You will find one or two tiny holes in them. These microphones are covered with fine inlet screen to prevent any dirt from entering inside from the surroundings. Sometimes these fine screens can get clogged with air. You should use the brush gently to clean this screen.

Sound Tubes

These sound tubes in your hearing aids determine as to how this sound comes out from the hearing aids and then goes inside your ears. These tubes usually get blocked by the dry skin or ear wax.

Few hearing aids are equipped with the wax guard protectors. Many of these can be changed by the patients. If you feel that despite a good battery you are not getting good volume, then you must change your wax guard. In case your hearing aids don't have a wax guard, you can use a wired cleaning tool for cleaning the end from where the hearing aid output comes out. This is the same end which goes into your ears.

Hearing Case

The outer case of hearing aids is made from hypo-allergic plastic and therefore it may not cause any allergic reaction. In case you do feel some unexplained infections or redness where your hearing aids touch your ears, you must stop wearing them and contact your audiologist immediately.

Conclusion

This may sound like huge work, but we've covered many scenarios here for your convenience. Try to practice simple cleaning techniques discussed here and keep your analog hearing aids in superb condition.
